East Leake Pre-School Playgroup
We, a committee run charity, operates in the Old School building adjacent to Brookside Primary School. We operate two age-streamed playrooms, the Playful Penguins and the Fabulous Flamingos and offer 35 places per session for local children aged between two and four. We are open term-time only and offer a mix of morning, afternoon and full-day sessions, accepting 2 and year 3 year old funding.
Our day consists of a mixture of adult and child led activities, facilitating the 7 areas of learning set out by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) with plenty of access to our private, secure outdoor play area which is full of fun and educational resources where the children can develop their physical skills and learn about their environment.
At East Leake Pre-School Playgroup our ethos is that we put the child first. We have a continued dedication to building positive relationships with families, the community, and the individual child. We offer a caring and nurturing environment that plans based on each individual’s needs and supports social, mental health and wellbeing. Our environment is set up to cater for the children’s ever changing interests.
The rooms consist of passionate and dedicated staff who offer a caring and nurturing environment where the children can feel safe and secure. We offer a child centred and holistic approach and pride ourselves in the inclusive practice we offer as well as our positive approach to behaviour management. The playgroup also has a designated safeguarding lead, health and safety officer and a SENCO who co-ordinates the care for children with additional needs.
Staff have constant access to training and CPD to be able to continue their roles to the highest standard. All staff are first aid trained and have their food hygeine certificates and regularly refresh their knowledge relating to safeguarding, positive behaviour management, health and safety, fire safety and equality and diversity.
Once you have been to look around and book your place, the management team will talk you through the settling in procedures which are catered to each individual child and are done sensitively and at a pace that suits you.
Being so close to Brookside School, we have great links and offer a fantastic transition for those children who will be attending the school. During the term before the children go to school they have the opportunity to visit the school every Thursday to join in with their outdoor play which enables them to learn about their new environment, give an insight to the routine and become familiar with their new teachers. We also liaise with the other local schools to be able to support the transition for all children.
Our annual calendar of events includes Sports Day, Easter and Christmas Craft sessions, and an end of year celebration to mark the achievements of each individual child. The children often visit their local community and regularly go on walks.

Childcare Information and Additional Needs
Settling In
- How will you help children to settle into your setting?
- Parents are welcome to have a look around the setting before completing the registration forms. Before children start they are then invited to have a 'settling in session' with/ without their parent. We follow the child's lead and if it is felt they need more settling sessions, that is possible.
Progress
- How will you communicate with parents/carers about their child's progress?
- When children start at Pre-school Playgroup we ask parents/ carers to complete a All about me' booklet so we learn all about the child and what they enjoy. East Leake Pre-school Playgroup use the Famly app to keep parents updated with their child's progress and share photographs. It is a great way for parents to see what children are learning about and getting up to. It also allows parents to share 'observations' of their child at home.

The playgroup's policy 'Supporting children with special educational needs' can be viewed by parents at any time. Accessibility The playgroup is based within the East Leake Sure Start Children's Centre. The building is on one level and offers easy access to the playgroup room and secure outdoor space. There is a unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet in the building. Staff Our staff have a wealth of experience working with children with a range of needs including: challenging behaviour, epilepsy, autism, English as a second language, speech and language and developmental delay. When a child starts at the playgroup, s/he will be assigned a key worker. The key worker (and other staff) will work closely with parents to develop a positive partnership. This includes regular communication to answer questions, offer support and guidance and to involve parents in all aspects of decision-making related to their child. As part of the team, we have a qualified Language Lead practitioner. We also have close links with other professionals including: 1. Area SENCO 2. Early Years Specialist Teacher 3. Speech and Language therapists 4. Healthcare professionals e.g. health visitor, GPs, specialist nurses 5. Sure Start Children's Centre 6. Local schools Curriculum The playgroup offers a broad, balanced range of activities that is planned to take into account the needs of all our children. Resources are easily accessible and we operate a free-flow system to offer freedom and choice to children. Transition When children are preparing to leave playgroup to start school (or another setting), we aim to support the child and their family to make the transition as smooth as possible. In consultation with parents, playgroup staff will liaise closely with the receiving setting. For example, this can include visits to the new setting for the child and key worker as well as staff from the receiving setting visiting playgroup.
