SEND Core Offer

Schools Extended Local Offer Response

1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

East Leake Academy offers provision for students with a wide range of needs. These include: cognition and learning; communication and interaction; social, emotional and mental health; and physical and/or sensory needs and disabilities.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?
  • Staff members seek to identify the needs of pupils with SEND as early as possible. This is most effectively done by gathering information from parents, education, health and care services (and feeding schools or early years settings) prior to the child’s entry into the school. Where needs have not been previously identified staff have an obligation to report observations to the SENDCo.
  • Through the Graduated Response to SEND, staff within the academy follow the cycle of Assess, Plan, Do & Review. Where students are identified as receiving additional support and included on the Inclusion register, regular review meetings will be offered to invite parents in to monitor and review targets (three times a year).
  • Continuous monitoring of those pupils with SEND by their teachers will help to ensure that they are able to reach their full potential. Regular assessment data checks are taken across the whole of the curriculum giving staff an overview of the rate of individual progress. Where concerns are identified by teachers, referral are then made to the Inclusion Faculty.
3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?
  • In order to make consistent continuous progress in relation to SEND provision the school encourages feedback from staff, parents and pupils during the academic year. Parents, staff and students are given an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of provision by means of a questionnaire.
  • Pupil progress will be monitored on a termly basis in line with the SEND Code of Practice. The Inclusion Faculty offer an ‘Open Door’ policy where parents can access the SENDCo regularly without making an appointment. Further feedback from parents can be given at any time through email contact available on the school website.
3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?
  • Any pupil who is falling significantly outside of the range of expected academic achievement in line with predicted performance indicators and grade boundaries will be monitored.
  • Once a pupil has been identified as possibly having SEND they will be closely monitored by staff in order to gauge their level of learning and possible difficulties.
  • The subject teacher will take steps to provide differentiated learning opportunities that will aid the pupil’s academic progression and enable the teacher to better understand the provision and teaching style that needs to be applied.
  • The SENDCo will be consulted as needed for support and advice and may wish to observe the pupil in class.
  • Through the above actions it can be determined which level of provision is needed.
  • Parents will be informed fully of every stage of their child’s development and the circumstances under which they are being monitored. Parents are encouraged to share information and queries with the school.
  • The student is monitored if concerns are raised by parent or teacher but this does not automatically place the pupil on the school’s inclusion register. Concerns are discussed with parents/carers.
  • Pupil progress meetings, academic tutorials and parent evenings are used to monitor and assess the progress being made by all students. The frequency of these meetings is dependent on individual progress.
3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

Under the new SEND reforms of 2014 all teachers will move towards a graduated approach: ‘Every Teacher is a Teacher of SEN’. East Leake Academy is an inclusive secondary school where all opportunities are equally available to all learners. High Quality Teaching is in the classroom where staff plan and deliver the curriculum to a wide range of learner abilities.

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?
  • In-class provision and support is deployed effectively to ensure that the curriculum is differentiated where necessary.
  • Individual or small group tuition is available where it is felt that pupils would benefit from this provision.
  • Setting appropriate individual targets that motivate pupils to do their best, and celebrating achievements at all levels.
  • Differentiated, planned and resourced lessons to enable all learners to access learning with a view to acheiving their potential.
  • Interventions used to address and narrow any progress concerns where applicable.
3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?
  • Pupils with SEND will have access to wave 1 and 2 of a school’s budget which equates to £6,000. (9 hours of support per identified pupil) Some pupils with SEND may access additional funding. This additional funding can be acquired from a budget which is devolved to and moderated by the Family of Schools.
  • For those students with the most complex needs, additional funding (HLN or High Level Needs) is retained by the local authority. This is accessed through the Family of Schools. The Family SENCO will refer individual applications to a multi-agency panel, which is administered by the Local Authority, who will determine whether the level and complexity of need meets the threshold for this funding.
  • Where appropriate, an alternative provision may be accessed to support individual needs and East Leake Academy currently use are EdClass, CP Riverside, and Melton Learning Hub. Mr C Berry holds overall responsibility for alternative provision at East Leake Academy.
3.f) How will my child/young person be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

As an inclusive school, every effort is made through the work of the pastoral team to ensure that all students are encouraged and feel able to participate in all activities offered as enrichment opportunities outside of the classroom. Students are considered on an individual basis according to their needs and support is appropriately provided.

3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?

Through the network of house teams and the emotional support of each form tutor, pupils are able to feel safe and secure in school. Tutor time provides an opportunity each day for pupils to touch base with their tutor/mentor and discuss any concerns. This support feeds into the overall Inclusion Team where further guidance can be found. The school have a full time qualified student support counsellor who takes referrals from the Inclusion team. The school also has access to the Healthy Family Team and will make relevant referrals as appropriate according to individual needs.

4. (For mainstream schools and maintained nurseries) Who is the school/setting's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and what are their contact details.

Parents are invited to attend meetings with external agencies regarding their child, and are kept up to date and consulted on any points of action drawn up with regards to provision. By fostering strong links between home and school, a working relationship can provide a secure base for the development of every individual.

8. What are the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education?

Students take part in providing the information that is given to staff and this is reviewed and added to where appropriate.
