East Midlands Youth String Orchestra

EMYSO is an orchestra with so much to offer. It breathes life into string playing every time its 25+ members unite together to play and learn about the power of music which is at their fingertips. It inspires young string players along a journey of discovery fuelled by challenging repertoire, excellent tuition and outstanding performances. Above all it is a place where talented young people can express themselves together in an environment defined as much by fun and friendship as it is by hard work and commitment – in short, everyone matters at EMYSO.

The orchestra is a place where together we can achieve the impossible – as current member Amelia states

‘The greatest part of being in EMYSO is when the group comes together to give an amazing performance of a piece that at the first rehearsal, seemed impossible. The biggest thing I will take away with me is the confidence I have gained from being part of a great orchestra that is so welcoming.’

Directed by distinguished violinist and conductor Richard Howarth, the group rehearse on Sunday afternoons (approximately every 3 weeks) throughout the year, performing an average of 4 concerts per season in addition to their annual concert tour which is a highlight for everyone! As well as offering specialist string tuition within a wide-ranging repertoire, the group offers opportunities for playing in smaller groups and for solo performance. This year EMYSO were invited to perform as part of the Music for Youth National festival!

If you’re 12-18 years old and play a string instrument we’d love to hear from you and invite you to experience it for yourself. To become a member we would take the opportunity to hear your playing in an audition, and in particular we are looking for players who:

*have a minimum standard of Associated Board Grade 5 or its equivalent
*will be able to attend regularly and will be available to play in all or very nearly all of our concerts (approximately four a year)
*have some sight-reading ability
*are interested in performing a wide-ranging repertoire
*get on well with other people
